Space for inspiration

that comes from deeper knowing

Hello, I am

Nerit Baum. I am an artist and a facilitator for transformative processes.  I see consciousness and sensation as both deeply subjective and universally relevant. I interweave contemporary artistic practice with insights from personal development and coaching. My particular focus lies on embodying experiencial wisdom and integration of mind and body through art and self inquiry.

...This Body itself is Emptiness
and Emptiness itself is this Body.
This Body is not other than Emptiness
and Emptiness is not other than this Body...
Heart Sutra translation by Thich Nhat Hanh

Artwork

In my work, I explore the interplay between tangible and intangible spaces. The mediums I use are diverse, ranging from drawing, photography, and material-based sculpture to site-specific installations. I develop unique techniques and experiment with a variety of substances as vehicles for emotions and inner imagery. This includes, among others, oil and wax-infused papers, beeswax, earth and oxide pigments, plant materials, remnants of historic wallpaper, and found objects. I work with the medium of light and its ability to penetrate and illuminate the material world.

Focusing

Mindful.
Creative.
Bodybased.

To inspire deeper self-awareness, I practice Focusing and offer focusing-oriented process facilitation and coaching.

What is Focusing?

The term Focusing comes from the phrase “focus on your inner experiencing”. It is a process of inward listening and sensing the somatic resonance related to a problem or topic. This deeper access to our body knowledge allows for a greater understanding and a completely new approach to our unconscious knowing. The attitude required is one of open, curious, and non-directive presence. The Focusing method was developed by Gene Gendlin, an American-Austrian philosopher and psychotherapist. It describes the pathway for making somatic resonance accessible for personal insight and healing.

Every bad feeling is potential energy toward a more right way of being if you give it space to move toward its rightness.

Art Projects

©Nerit Baum

I have been supporting children and adolescents in creative processes for about 15 years, working pedagogically with groups in both in and outside of educational settings. I am passionate about free artistic education and art projects that extend beyond the confines of the traditional lesson plan. Art fosters emotional growth and cultivates flexible and divergent thinking, helping people discover their own internal compass.

I have been organising art projects  between secondary schools  in collaboration with art institutions for over 10 years.  I lead and coordinate art projects and project weeks focused on personal development and civic education.

Where

The studio serves as the essential core of my artistic practice, a space for exploration where I playfully investigate the contrasts between materiality and immateriality, engaging with the interplay of space and form, becoming and passing away. My approach is determined yet open-ended, allowing me to delve into the fundamental, direct experiences of our existence—those elements that transcend words and profoundly permeate our lives. My works aim to articulate a visual expression for that which lies beyond language.

& I

I have been living in the Altmark for about 10 years and helped to set up the art department at a reformed comprehensive school. Before living in the Altmark, I studied sculpture and art education in various places.  In the Altmark, the vastness, empty spaces, historic buildings and curiosity about projects in border areas made me feel at home. I grew up near Aachen.

My mother’s work with children on the autism spectrum and with severe multiple disabilities taught me early on to look behind the façade and for  the essential beyond the obvious. At the same time, my father’s work abroad awakened my curiosity for other worlds – from early on, I came into contact with cultures outside Europe. After leaving school, I was drawn out into the world: I lived in Australia, India and Great Britain for a long time – in search of inner freedom, depth and new perspectives. Inspired by my travels, I have dedicated myself to various paths of knowledge for many years – starting with anthroposophy, Indian and Western philosophy in my younger years, through Buddhism to non-duality and psychology today. Understanding attachment, trauma, neurodiversity, but also creativity and flow are important for my work.
